…As with other areas along the Gulf of Guinea, it is unclear whether the first Europeans to reach the region were the Portuguese (15th century) or sailors from Dieppe in northern France in the 14th century. Although the Dieppe manuscripts were burned in 1694, it is believed that the word malaguette (French for pepper) derived from Indian pepper and its French nickname grains du paradis (grains of paradise) were already in use in 1455. In any case, the value of the local grains of paradise faded in Europe as sea routes to the East were opened and Asian spices were brought to Europe in large quantities. …
