(Abbreviation for Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) Negotiations began between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1982, and the treaty was signed in 1991. After it came into force, it stipulated a reduction of strategic nuclear weapons by about 30% over a seven-year period. It was ratified in 1994.
