Life - Life (English spelling)

Life - Life (English spelling)

An American graphic magazine. It was first published as a weekly magazine in 1936 by H.R. Luce, the creator of Time magazine. Life, which reported on world events with large, full-page photographs "for you to see and enjoy, for you to see and be amazed, for you to see and learn" (the founding words), quickly gained huge popularity and established the methodology of photojournalism, greatly influencing magazines around the world. However, in the 1960s, as the popularity of television spread and the appeal of large-circulation magazines for the masses faded, the magazine continued to lower subscription fees in an attempt to stop advertising from leaking out, aiming to acquire even larger circulations, which led to a deterioration in management, and was further hit by postal rate hikes and the recession. In 1970, circulation had grown to 8.5 million copies per issue (5.6 million in 1955), but it was finally suspended in 1972. It was revived as a monthly magazine in 1978 with a lower circulation level, but due to declining sales, it was discontinued in May 2000. Later, Time Inc., the magazine publishing division of the American company Time Warner, relaunched Life as a newspaper insert in October 2004. This takes the form of a free weekly magazine inserted into the Friday editions of partner newspapers.
