Noji is a fishing village belonging to Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, famous as the birthplace of houseboat fishermen who have lived on boats since ancient times. Other known houseboat fishermen are based in Nishisonogi, Hirado Island, and Goto. Many Noji fishermen made their homes on their boats, and they drifted and moved around while working mainly in the Seto Inland Sea, engaged in taseami fishing and other activities. As a result, sub-villages and temporary settlements were formed all over the Seto Inland Sea region, and it is said that there were about 100 of them between 1704 and 1887 (1st year of the Hoei era - 20th year of the Meiji era).
