Oak (Quercus acutissima)
Also written as 'Kunage'. A deciduous tall tree of the Fagaceae family. It is found in Japan, the Korean peninsula, and China. It grows naturally in the mountains and fields, but was once planted as firewood and charcoal. Along with Konara, it is a typical tree species found in secondary forests throughout Japan. The leaves are oblong, 12-15 cm long, and sawtoothed. Mature leaves are hairless and smooth, very similar to chestnut leaves. Flowers bloom in early spring as the leaves grow. Male flowers hang down as yellow spikes 4-6 cm long, and female flowers are small and grow at the ends of branches. The fruit is a cupule. It is flattened and spherical, densely covered with thin scales, and is a deep yellowish brown color.
