Yaro Hyōbanki - Yaro Hyōbanki

Japanese: 野郎評判記 - やろうひょうばんき

A book of reviews of young Kabuki actors. After the ban on young Kabuki, the so-called Yaro Kabuki was established under the slogan "Kyogen-zukushi." Beautiful young Kabuki actors were the stars, and their good looks and the charm of their singing and dancing were the selling points. So a book reviewing them based on homosexual tastes was created under the influence of the Yujo Hyoban-ki. Kabuki actors were officially "yaro (adult males)," so this is called Yaro Hyoban-ki. The reviews mainly cover their looks, personality, singing and dancing skills, voice quality, how they perform at banquets, how they treat customers as young actors who sell sex, and even the charm of their lives in the bedroom, and are often accompanied by poems and portraits.

歌舞伎若衆に対する評判の書。いわゆる野郎歌舞伎は若衆歌舞伎禁止後〈狂言尽し〉を標榜して成立したが，美少年の歌舞伎若衆をスターとし，その美しい容姿と歌舞の魅力を売り物としていたから，それを男色趣味にもとづいて評判する書が，遊女評判記の影響のもとに作られた。歌舞伎若衆は表向きは〈野郎(成人男子)〉であったから，これを〈野郎評判記〉という。評するところは主としてその容色，性格，歌舞の巧拙，声のよしあし，酒宴の座などでの座持ち，色を売る若衆としての客に接する態度から閨中の味わいに及び，詩歌や肖像画を添えることが多い。
