Dionysios Thrax

An ancient Greek grammarian from around 170-90 BC. Born in Alexandria. After studying under Aristarchus of Samothrace, he moved to the island of Rhodes, where he taught grammar and literature. His only surviving work, Grammatology, is the first concise summary of the grammatical research of the Alexandrian school under the influence of Stoic philosophy. Although it is a small pamphlet on morphology only, without syntax or stylistics, it was respected as a standard of ancient Greek grammar throughout the Roman and Byzantine periods. Furthermore, the grammatical terms he created have been passed down through Latin and are still in use today.

古代ギリシアの文法学者。アレクサンドリアの出身。サモトラケのアリスタルコスに師事した後，ロドス島に移り，文法と文学の教師をつとめた。彼の著作の中で唯一現存する《文法学》は，ストア哲学の影響の下にアレクサンドリア学派の文法研究を初めて簡潔にまとめたもので，統辞論や文体論は含まない形態論のみの小冊子ではあるが，ローマ時代，ビザンティン帝国時代を通じて古代ギリシア語文法の規範として尊重されていた。また彼のつくった文法用語はラテン語を経て現在にいたるまで用いられ続けている。
