Yamada [city] - Yamada

Japanese: 山田[市] - やまだ

An old city in central Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the gentle hills of the upper reaches of the Onga River. The city center is divided into two districts, Kamiyamada and Shimoyamada, and developed as a coal mining town at the southern end of the Chikuho coalfield. It developed rapidly with the opening of the Yamada Line in 1900, but due to rationalization from the late 1950s, coal mines were closed one after another, and the population dropped sharply, and as of 1995, the population is less than one third of its peak. After the coal mines closed, orchards were established and factories were attracted, and in recent years grape and plum cultivation, rubber manufacturing, and ceramics manufacturing have been carried out. In 1988, the Kamiyamada Line was abolished. In March 2006, it merged with Inatsuki Town, Usui Town, and Kaho Town in Kaho District to become a city, Kama City. ^{22.05 km2} . 11,784 people (2003).

福岡県中部の旧市。1954年市制。遠賀川上流部のゆるやかな丘陵地を占める。中心市街は上山田，下山田の２地区に分かれ，筑豊炭田南端の炭鉱町として発達，1900年山田線の開通により飛躍的に発展したが，1950年代末からの合理化により炭鉱の閉山が相次ぎ，人口も急減し，1995年現在の人口は最盛期の３分の１にも満たない。炭鉱閉山後は果樹園化や工場誘致が進められ，近年はブドウ・プラム栽培やゴム工業，窯業などが行われる。1988年上山田線は廃止された。2006年３月，嘉穂郡稲築町，碓井町，嘉穂町と合併し市制，嘉麻市となる。22.05km²。１万1784人（2003）。
