In Germany, business administration is generally called business economics (Betriebswirtschaftslehre). This is because, unlike American business administration, which seeks to expand the scope of management theory to include not only public and private enterprises, but also various organizations such as government, education, the military, churches, and labor unions, it initially focused only on private enterprises (corporations). However, the term business economics only came into widespread use after the 1920s; before that it was called commercial business administration, private economics, or corporate economics.
