Kummerowia striata (English name: Kummerowia striata)

Japanese: ヤハズソウ(矢筈草) - ヤハズソウ(英語表記)Kummerowia striata
Kummerowia striata (English name: Kummerowia striata)
An annual plant of the legume family. It is distributed throughout Japan and East Asia, and has become naturalized in North America. It commonly grows as a weed in fields and roadsides. The stem is 10-50 cm tall, branches well from the base, and has downward-facing hairs. The leaves consist of three leaflets, each of which is 1-1.5 cm long, oblong, and blunt, and the stipules are pale brown, ovate, and membranous. From August to October, one or two small, pale purple, butterfly-shaped flowers grow in the axils. The calyx has short hairs, is bell-shaped, and has five lobes. The pods are small and contain one seed inside. They do not split even when ripe, but have persistent calyxes. When the leaflets are pulled, they break at the veins, forming an arrow-shaped shape, hence the name.
