A deciduous climbing plant of the Vitaceae family. It is commonly found in mountainous areas throughout Japan except Kyushu, and is particularly common in beech forests. The stems are long and thick, dark brown, and tendrils that wrap around other trees. The leaves are pentagonal and circular, 10-30 cm in diameter, and deeply heart-shaped at the base, growing opposite the tendrils. The undersides are densely covered with reddish-brown, curly hairs. In June, the plant produces large panicles that grow opposite the leaves, and often has a single tendril at the bottom of the inflorescence. The flowers are small, yellow-green, with ring-shaped calyxes, and the petals are fused at the tips and separate at the bottom, and detach from the flower bed after flowering. The berries are spherical, less than 1 cm in diameter, and ripen to a black-purple color. They are edible, although they have a sour taste.
