Urahagusa - Urahagusa

Japanese: ウラハグサ - うらはぐさ
Urahagusa - Urahagusa

A perennial plant of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm is thin and somewhat hard, and produces many thin runners to form a clump, 30-50 cm tall. The upper surface of the leaf is powdery white, the underside is green and shiny, the veins are raised, and the leaf is twisted at the base, so the front and back are reversed. From August to October, it produces cone-shaped inflorescences, with sparse spikelets. The spikelets are broad lanceolate, with 5-10 florets, short glumes, and three-veined glumes with thread-like hairs growing on the edges along with the elongated base. It is a genus and one species endemic to Japan, and grows in clusters on cliffs in the mountains of the western Kanto region, the Tokai region, and the Kii Peninsula. Its name comes from the fact that the leaves are reversed. It is cultivated for ornamental purposes under the name of "wind-wielding grass." The genus name is the Latin name meaning Hakone Grass.
