1845‐1920 German plant physiologist. Born the son of a druggist in Grevenstein. After receiving private tutoring and training at a gymnasium, he passed the pharmacist examination. He studied chemistry, pharmacology, and botany at the Universities of Göttingen and Marburg. He later studied under plant physiologist J. von Sachs. He taught at the Universities of Bonn and Leipzig, among others. He conducted a wide range of research, including the quantification of osmotic pressure, tropism, taxis, exercise physiology, and enzyme chemistry, and built the foundations of modern plant physiology.
