A summer hearth used to place a kettle on and boil water during tea ceremonies. They are made of iron, bronze, earth, wood, ceramics, etc. In ancient times, they were in the shape of a Chinese tripod, but after being introduced to Japan, kirikake furo (a furo designed so that the wings of the kettle hang over the entire mouth) came to be used as one of the daisu kaigu (daisukaigu). As the tea ceremony progressed, the shapes of kettles became more diverse, and with the invention of the trivet, earthen furo (dofuro) came to be made in Nara around the time of Takeno Jo'o, and a mouth with a trivet installed and a kettle hung over it became the standard. Representative kirikake furo are the Chosen furo and the Ryukyu furo, both of which are made of bronze or iron and feature windows on the front and back. Depending on the shape, there are various types of Doburo: Sukigi, Sho'o, Shiribari, Yoho, Doan, and Benibachi. Furthermore, Shin is Doburo, Gyo is Karado, and Kusa is Tetsuburo and Itaburo.
