Yāqūt al-Rūmī (English spelling)

A Muslim geographer. Born in Anatolia to Greek parents, he was sold as a slave to a wealthy merchant in Hama (southwest Syria), who named him Yakut (Carbuncle). He worked in trading, and after he was freed, he set out on his own, opened a bookstore, and began writing. He went on a journey and stayed in Persia, where he fled when the Mongol army led by Genghis Khan invaded. While frequenting the library in Merw (Mary), he began compiling the geographical dictionary "Collection of Countries" in 1218, and completed it in 1224 while moving around from place to place. His works include "Collection of Writers," a collection of biographies of literati related to Arab literature, and "Collection of Genealogies," a collection of genealogies of various Arab tribes. Many of his quotes are from ancient books that have been lost and no longer exist, doubling the value of his work.
