A city in the southwest of Gifu Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1918. It occupies the northwest of the Nobi Plain, and the Ibi River flows south through the eastern part of the city. Within the city limits, there is a flood control community ring surrounded by levees. The city center developed as a castle town, a post town on the Mino road, and a river port on the Ibi River. It is a key point for rail transport, with the Tokaido Main Line passing through it and the Tarumi Railway and Yoro Railway branching off from it. In the southern part, there is an interchange for the Meishin Expressway, and the Tokai Loop Expressway branches off from it. Since the early Taisho period, it has rapidly developed as an industrial city, with industries such as textiles, ceramics, and electrical equipment thriving, and the value of manufactured goods shipped was 472 billion yen (2003), the second highest in the prefecture. In March 2006, Kamishizu Town in Yoro District and Suminomata Town in Anpachi District were incorporated into the city. 206.57km2 . 161,160 people (2010).
