The first king of the Kingdom of Syria (reigned 305-281 BC). Commonly known as Nicator (meaning "the victorious one"). Founder of the Seleucid dynasty. A subordinate of Alexander the Great, he gained Babylonia after Alexander's death and founded the kingdom. He campaigned as far as India, defeating Antichotus I at the Battle of Ipsus in 301 BC and Lysimachus at the Battle of Corupedion in 281 BC, and came to dominate most of Western Asia.
