Montagnard is a French word meaning "mountain people." (1) A general term for the mountain minority groups living in the former French Indochina region of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. It includes the Bahnar, Sedang, and Loven peoples, who speak languages belonging to the Mon-Khmer family of Austroasiatic languages, as well as the Jarai, Raglai, and Rhadé peoples, who speak languages belonging to the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) family.
