Montagnard is a French word meaning "mountain people." (1) A general term for the mountain minority groups living in the former French Indochina region of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. It includes the Bahnar, Sedang, and Loven peoples, who speak languages belonging to the Mon-Khmer family of Austroasiatic languages, as well as the Jarai, Raglai, and Rhadé peoples, who speak languages belonging to the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) family. モンタニャールとはフランス語で〈山地民〉の意。(1)ベトナム，カンボジア，ラオスの旧フランス領インドシナ地域に住む山岳少数民族の総称。アウストロアジア語族のモン･クメール語族に属する言語を話すバナール族Bahnar，セダン族Sedang，ロベン族Loven等とともに，アウストロネシア(マレー･ポリネシア)語族に属する言語を使用するジャライ族Jarai，ラグライ族Raglai，ラデー族Rhadé等を含んでいる。
