…Since the first variety was announced in 1891, it has been improved in Europe and the United States, and is also called Christmas begonia because of its flowering period. Recently, it has been sold as a winter flower pot in Japan. (5) Elatior begonia (illustration) It was first developed in England in the 1880s by crossing Begonia socotrana with a horticultural variety of tuberous begonia. It produces relatively large flowers that are single, double, or semi-double and bloom for a long period from autumn to spring. In recent years, the group of varieties improved and bred by Otto Rieger of Germany, known as Rieger's begonia, have been widely cultivated as potted plants around the world, and their consumption has now surpassed that of cyclamen, the queen of potted flowers. …
