A city in central Mie prefecture bordering Nara prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Its central town is in the southwest of the Ueno Basin, and is served by the Kintetsu Osaka Line. In ancient times, it was a key transportation point entering Yamato from the eastern provinces, a post town on the route to Ise Shrine, and in early modern times it was a castle town of the Nabari Todo clan of the Tsu domain. It is a commercial center for the region, and with large-scale housing development in areas such as Kikyogaoka, it is rapidly becoming a commuter town for Osaka. The Kintetsu Osaka Line passes through the city. In the south are Akame 48 Waterfalls and Kochidani. Area: 129.77 km2 . Population: 80,284 (2010).
