A banded or layered igneous intrusion [Wager: 1953]. In general, crystallization differentiation cannot be observed directly in normal volcanic activity, but in some cases, such as thick sill-like intrusions, the composition may change vertically, and it is assumed that crystallization differentiation occurred during the cooling process of the magma chamber. Well-known examples of such layered intrusions include the Pali-sade diabase sill, the Skaergaard intrusion, the Bushveld complex, the Stillwater complex, and the Shonkin Sag laccolith. All of these intrusions are large, and it is unclear whether the internal crystallization differentiation can be observed because they are large, or whether the internal crystallization differentiation occurs because they are large. It is common to apply inferences obtained from large rock bodies to small rock bodies in terms of general differentiation processes, but in reality there are many small rock bodies for which crystallization differentiation processes are unknown, and consideration is needed as to whether these differences are simply due to differences in scale or whether fundamentally different crystallization processes occurred due to differences in scale [Suzuki: 1994].
