A satellite city in the southeastern part of Brazil, within the São Paulo metropolitan area (40km east). Population 125,992 (1991). Founded in the 17th century, it developed rapidly in the 20th century as a food supply center and satellite city for São Paulo. There are many small vegetable and persimmon growers in the area, and a persimmon festival is held every year. It is also the largest poultry-raising area in the state of São Paulo. As a result of the concentration of Japanese people in the metropolitan area after World War II, it is now the largest Japanese population in the country, excluding the city of São Paulo.
