Canal Mania

Japanese: 運河狂時代 - うんがきょうじだい

This refers to the enthusiasm with which canal networks were built across the UK in the second half of the 18th century. The success of the Bridgewater Canal, completed in 1761, in transporting coal prompted the development of canal networks in Lancashire and the Midlands, the stage for the Industrial Revolution. These networks covered the whole country, and the Grand Trunk Canal, which linked the Trent Valley in the Midlands with the River Mersey in Lancashire, came to link major cities across the country. From the 1830s onwards, railways took over as the main route, and the canal mania came to an end.

18世紀後半の英国で全国に運河網が建設された熱狂ぶりをさしていう。1761年に開発されたブリッジウォーター運河が石炭の輸送によって成功したのをきっかけに，産業革命の舞台となったランカシャーやミッドランド一帯に運河網が開発された。それは全国におよび，とりわけミッドランドのトレント渓谷とランカシャーのマージー川を結ぶ大幹線運河（グランド・トランク・キャナル）を基軸にして，全国の主要都市は運河で結ばれるようになった。1830年代以降主役は鉄道に代わり，運河狂時代も終った。
