This refers to the enthusiasm with which canal networks were built across the UK in the second half of the 18th century. The success of the Bridgewater Canal, completed in 1761, in transporting coal prompted the development of canal networks in Lancashire and the Midlands, the stage for the Industrial Revolution. These networks covered the whole country, and the Grand Trunk Canal, which linked the Trent Valley in the Midlands with the River Mersey in Lancashire, came to link major cities across the country. From the 1830s onwards, railways took over as the main route, and the canal mania came to an end. → Related article Duke of Bridgewater Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
