A device that uses resonance to extract a specific frequency component from vibrations or waves. (1) Usually refers to a device for sound, also called a resonance box. The bodies of stringed instruments, the soundboards of pianos, and the tubes of wind instruments are all resonance boxes, although they have different shapes. A wooden box with a vibrating column of air inside is also a type of resonator and is called a sound box. It is used, for example, to amplify the sound of a tuning fork. (2) In the case of electromagnetic waves or electrical vibrations, it is called a resonator.
