The second bishop of Antioch, succeeding Euodius from about 35-110. Ignatius, who called himself Theophoros (meaning "God-bearer"), was a Gentile Christian. Although he had no direct relationship with the apostles, he held Paul and John in high esteem and inherited their faith. During the reign of Emperor Trajan, probably about 110, he was arrested as the head of the Antiochian church, escorted by ten soldiers to Rome, where he was killed by wild animals.
