In buildings and civil engineering structures, this refers to the gaps and joints between components spaced slightly apart. In particular, it refers to the joints of masonry stones, bricks, and concrete blocks, or the joints of tiles used as a finish. In the case of exterior walls made of stone, brick, or tiles, mortar is generally used as the joint, but in order to absorb deformation over time, it is becoming more common to fill the gaps with a resilient synthetic resin called a sealant.
