It is the oldest large Western-style ship still standing in Japan. It was built in England in 1874 and sailed to Yokohama the following year. It is a twin-screw iron steamship with a length of 86m, width of 9m and gross tonnage of 1,027 tons, and has two masts (now three) for auxiliary sailing. It was originally used as a lighthouse patrol ship, but as it was the best new ship at the time, it was also used as a royal ship for the Imperial family. In 1876, it sailed as the royal ship for Emperor Meiji's cruise to Tohoku and Hokkaido, and in 1941, July 20th, the day of its return to Yokohama from this voyage, was designated Marine Memorial Day.
