… Traditional kiri-gumi joints used in Japanese wooden architecture are classified according to their function: (1) those that simply increase length, (2) those that withstand twisting forces, (3) those that withstand tensile forces, and (4) those that withstand tensile and twisting forces. (1) includes tsukitsuke (a joint that adds length), dantsugi (a joint that resists twisting), and sogitsugi (a joint that resists tension). (2) includes mechigai-tsugi (a joint that resists twisting), kai-no-kuchi-tsugi (a joint that resists twisting), (3) includes ari-tsugi (a joint that resists twisting), sickle-tsugi (a joint that resists twisting), pole-tsugi (a joint that resists twisting), and (4) includes otsukake-daisen-tsugi (a joint that resists twisting), kanawa-tsugi (a joint that resists twisting), and isukatsugi (a joint that resists twisting). Dantsugi and sogitsugi are used for joists and rafters, and kai-no-kuchi-tsugi for the central pillars of towers. …
