A general term for artificial polymeric compounds that exhibit excellent plasticity. It is essentially synonymous with plastic, but sometimes only those that can be made into molded products are called plastic. The first successful industrial production was phenolic resin (Bakelite) invented by Baekeland in 1907. Rapid development began after Staudinger established the theoretical system of polymer chemistry, and further development took place as the supply of raw materials became abundant with the development of the petrochemical industry. They can be broadly divided into thermoplastic resins and thermosetting resins, but most are currently the former. In general, they are easier to mold and process than other materials, are light, have excellent resistance to water, oil, and chemicals, have good electrical insulation, and can be freely made into transparent or colored ones. They are widely used in everyday items, furniture, building materials, electrical parts, industrial materials, etc., replacing traditional materials such as metal and wood. →Reinforced plastics/Plastic industry→Related topics Synthetic chemical industry | Cation exchange resin | Laminate Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
