A general term for artificial polymeric compounds that exhibit excellent plasticity. It is essentially synonymous with plastic, but sometimes only those that can be made into molded products are called plastic. The first successful industrial production was phenolic resin (Bakelite) invented by Baekeland in 1907. Rapid development began after Staudinger established the theoretical system of polymer chemistry, and further development took place as the supply of raw materials became abundant with the development of the petrochemical industry. They can be broadly divided into thermoplastic resins and thermosetting resins, but most are currently the former. In general, they are easier to mold and process than other materials, are light, have excellent resistance to water, oil, and chemicals, have good electrical insulation, and can be freely made into transparent or colored ones. 人造高分子化合物のうちですぐれた可塑性を示すものの総称。実質的にはプラスチックと同義だが，成形品になるものだけをプラスチックという場合がある。工業的生産に成功したのは，1907年ベークランドが発明したフェノール樹脂（ベークライト）が最初で，シュタウディンガーが高分子化学の理論的体系を確立してから急激な展開が始まり，さらに石油化学工業の発展で原料の供給が豊富となるに及んで飛躍的に発展。大別すると熱可塑性樹脂と熱硬化性樹脂に分けられるが，現在はそのほとんどが前者である。一般に成形，加工が他の材料に比べて容易で，軽く，耐水・耐油・耐薬品性にすぐれ，電気絶縁性がよく，透明なものや着色したものを自由に作ることができる。金属や木材などの従来の材料に代わって，日用雑貨，家具，建築材料，電気部品，工業材料などに広く利用されている。→強化プラスチック／プラスチック工業
