Murut tribe - Murut (English spelling)

Japanese: ムルット族 - ムルットぞく（英語表記）Murut

The name was given to the inland inhabitants of the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak in the north of Borneo, and the Indonesian state of East Kalimantan in Southeast Asia, but it includes groups that are quite different in language and culture. The Murut people of Sabah are linguistically related to the Philippine peoples, and have traditionally been engaged in upland rice cultivation by slash-and-burn cultivation. The Murut people of Sarawak and Kalimantan, which consist of the Lung, Daye, and Kelabit tribes, have developed irrigated rice cultivation in the highlands.

東南アジア，ボルネオ島北部のマレーシア領サバ州やサラワク州およびインドネシア領東カリマンタン州にかけての内陸住民に与えられた名称であるが，言語･文化的にきわめて異なる諸集団をその中に含んでいる。サバ州内のムルット族は言語的にフィリピンの諸民族に親縁関係を有し，伝統的に焼畑による陸稲栽培に従事している。サラワク州からカリマンタン側のムルット族は，ルン，ダイェ，ケラビットなどの諸族からなり，高地における灌漑水田耕法を発達させている。
