This refers to fruit cultivation where developing fruit is not bagged. Advances in pesticides have made it possible to eliminate the need for bagging for species and varieties that do not damage the appearance and have little risk of cracking by applying appropriate chemicals. Bagging-free cultivation is widespread for Delicious apple varieties such as Iwai and Asahi, and Ruby and other varieties, as well as brown pear varieties in Japan. However, in the southern half of Japan, bagging is often necessary to protect the fruit from sunburn.
