The Congo River is the largest river in the world, with a total area of 775,000 km2. It originates in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), flows westward (it splits into two major tributaries, the Boum and the Were), flows south from Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, and joins the Congo River slightly south of the equator. The Boum and midstream Ubangi form the border between Central Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the lower reaches of the Ubangi form the border between the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. *Some of the terminology that mentions the "Wele River" is listed below.
