…Led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, they were the first American expeditionary team to cross the continent from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Under orders from President Jefferson, their mission was to reach the source of the Missouri River, search for a route to the Pacific Ocean, and study the geography, flora, fauna, and Indians. The 48-member team left St. Louis in May 1804, crossed the Rocky Mountains, reached the mouth of the Columbia River on the Pacific coast in November 1805, and returned to St. Louis in September 1806. …
