In the Greek city-states, aristocracy (aristokratia) was established during the transition from monarchy to democracy in the 8th to 6th centuries BC. The word aristoi (aristocrat) means "the most excellent," and their basic virtue was courage. However, with the introduction of iron weapons and the spread of heavy infantry tactics, as well as the increasing importance of monetary wealth, social changes gradually led to the collapse of aristocratic rule.
