There are various legends about their number, but according to Hesiod's Theogony, they are generally said to be nine goddesses born to Zeus and Mnemosyne (memory) in Pieria at the foot of Mount Olympus. They are said to have acted as judges in musical contests between Apollo and the satyr flute expert Marsyas, and to have defeated the Thracian musician Thamyris who challenged them to a contest, taking away his eyesight and musical skills, but there are few myths specific to them. …
