The official German name is the International Music Competition of the West German Broadcasting Union, Internationaler Musikwettbewerb der Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland München, but the translation is usually called by the name above, which includes the name of the place where it is held. It was founded in 1952 and has been held every year since then. In the first year, only the piano category was included, but gradually the number of categories was increased, and several categories are judged each time.
