From the viewpoint of water balance, it is more reasonable to indicate the wetness or dryness of the climate by calculating the water surplus or shortage, which is the difference between the amount of precipitation and the maximum possible amount of evaporation from the earth's surface when sufficient water is supplied (potential evapotranspiration, maximum possible evapotranspiration). In other words, if the amount of precipitation is greater than the potential evapotranspiration, there is a water surplus, and if the opposite is true, there is a water shortage.
