A war that began in 1522-23, when knights from the Rhine, Swabia, and Franconia regions of Germany, led by F. Sickingen, who became the leader of their alliance, attacked the Archbishop and Elector of Triel. The Archbishop immediately allied with the Count of the Rhine-Palz (Elector) and Landgrave Philip of Hesse (Philip von Hesse), and launched a counterattack, which resulted in the defeat of the knights. Sickingen fled to his castle, Landstuhl, and was killed. U. Hutten, his ideological representative, also fled to Zurich, and the downfall of the knights was final. The Knights' War was a result of the frustration of the knights directly under the Empire over the rise of the princes, which was stimulated by the Reformation movement, but politically it was completely reactionary and was nothing more than a feud.
