〘noun〙① The beating of the pulse. The regular movement of the heart. ※Keikei Yawa (1810), Vol. 1: "Even in the lower three arms of thin people, the pulsation can be seen on the underside of the skin." ② A periodic, continuous, powerful movement like a pulse. Also, that movement. ※Nakazawa Rinsen, Commenting on Modern Civilization and Predicting the New Civilization of the Future (1915), Vol. 8: "We must rest in the bosom of our common Mother Earth and listen to the whispers of the deepest, most holy love that pulsates from there to us." ③ Periodic vibrations of the ground that are not felt by the human body. The period lasts a few seconds. It occurs with ocean waves, low pressure, the passage of a cold front, etc. ※Kokumin Shimbun - November 12, 1903 (Meiji 36) "The ground exhibits extremely small, sudden tremors that are imperceptible to the human body, as well as slower vibrations. These are called pulsations."

〘名〙① 脈が打つこと。心臓の規則的な動き。※形影夜話（1810）上「痩人は三部の下臂内にても、其脈動皮裏に見ゆるものあり」② 脈搏のように、周期的・継続的な力強い動きをすること。また、その動き。※現代文明を評し、当来の新文明を卜す（1915）〈中沢臨川〉八「我等は我等の共通の母なる大地の胸に憩ひ、そこから我等に脈動するところの最も深く、最も聖き愛の囁きを聞かねばならぬ」③ 人体に感じるほどではない地面の周期的振動。周期は数秒。海の波や、低気圧、寒冷前線の通過等に伴って起こる。※国民新聞‐明治三六年（1903）一一月一二日「地面は人体に感ぜざる程の極く小さくして性質の急激なる微動と、稍緩慢なる振動を呈するあり〈略〉之を脈動と称す」
