Located in the southeastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea, Mihara City was incorporated in 1936. After Takakage Kobayakawa built Mihara Castle in 1582, the city developed as a castle town, and new rice fields were developed. From the Taisho to early Showa periods, textile, cement, and rayon factories were established, and in 1943, a vehicle factory was established, and the city developed as an industrial city, mainly in the coastal areas such as Itosaki. In recent years, the transportation system has been improved, and companies are locating in the Mihara City Western Industrial Park. It is also famous as a sake brewing area. The Sanyo Main Line, Shinkansen, Kure Line, and Sanyo Expressway run through the city, and the new Hiroshima Airport opened in 1993 in Hongo-cho (now part of Mihara City), which is located to the west of the city, making it a transportation hub. There is a route to the Geiyo Islands from Mihara Port. Fudekageyama is a scenic spot in the Seto Inland Sea National Park. There are the ruins of Mihara Castle (historic site) and a habitat for amphioxus (natural monument). In March 2005, Yamato Town in Kamo District, Hongo Town in Toyota District, and Kui Town in Mitsugi District were incorporated. The area is 471.55 km2 . The population is 100,509 (2010).
