The capital of the Krasnodar region in southwestern Russia. It was called Ekaterinodar until 1920, and then changed to Krasnodar. It is located on the left bank of the Kuban River, close to the eastern shore of the Black Sea. It is the center of agriculture and livestock, and has machine tool and oil refining industries. It was founded in 1793 as a military base for the Kuban Cossacks. With the opening of the railway at the end of the 19th century, it developed into a commercial city, and with the discovery of the Maykop oil field in the early 20th century, oil-related industries flourished.
