A village in Minamisaku District, eastern Nagano Prefecture. Population 1,334 (1995). The Minamiaiki River, a tributary on the east bank of the Chikuma River, flows northwest through the center of the village, and cultivated land opens up along the river, but most of the total area belongs to the Kanto Mountains. The Okumikawa Valley upstream of the river is a representative scenic spot. The main industry is agriculture, and in recent years the cultivation of highland vegetables such as Chinese cabbage and lettuce has rapidly increased, accounting for nearly 80% of total agricultural product sales. The village is famous for producing matsutake mushrooms, and other crops such as chrysanthemums and nameko mushrooms are also cultivated.
