A device that reports the location of a fire to a fire station or guardhouse. It consists of a transmitter and a receiving panel. There are two types of fire alarms: manual and automatic. The manual type, which sends a signal by pressing a button, is for public use in urban areas. The automatic type is attached to the ceiling or under the eaves of a room and detects and reports temperature changes in the event of a fire, detects smoke with a photocell, and is ionized by ionizing the air with radium or other substances and detecting the change in electrical resistance caused by combustion gases.

火災の発生場所を消防署や守衛所などに通報する装置。発信機と受信盤とからなる。手動火災報知機と自動火災報知機の２種類があり，ボタンで信号を発信する手動式は市街地の公設用。自動式には，部屋の天井や軒下などに取り付け，火災時の温度変化を感知通報させる方式，光電管で煙を感知させる方式，ラジウム等で空気を電離しておき燃焼ガスでその電気抵抗値が変化するのを感知させるイオン式など。
