A perennial plant of the Campanulaceae family. It grows wild in sunny mountains and fields, and is found in the temperate zone of East Asia. It is cultivated for decorative purposes and also used as cut flowers. The stems are upright, 40-100 cm tall, and the leaves are alternate, long oval, and have fine sawtooth edges. From summer to autumn, beautiful purple flowers bloom in the upper leaf axils. The corolla is open, bell-shaped, with five lobes, and some are white or have double flowers. The dried root is the herb bellflower root, which is used to remove phlegm. It has long been counted as one of the seven autumn herbs.
