Anato - Anou

A place name in the center of Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. In the Engishiki, it is the starting station for the Hokuriku Road and is recorded as "Anau Gobiki." There are many horizontal cave tombs built by ancient immigrant clans. It is presumed to be the site of Shiga Takaanaho Palace of Emperors Keiko and Seimu, which appears in the Kujihongi, but has not yet been excavated. The stone walls built by the stonemasons who lived in this area are called Anau-zumi, and were used in many early modern castles such as Azuchi Castle. There is Anaou Station on the Keihan Electric Railway Ishiyama-Sakamoto Line and Shimosakamoto Interchange on the Kosei Road.

滋賀県大津市中部の地名。『延喜式(えんぎしき)』の北陸道への始発駅で「穴多(あのう)五疋(ひき)」と記される。古代の渡来系氏族による横穴式古墳が多い。『先代旧事本紀(くじほんぎ)』にみえる景行(けいこう)、成務(せいむ)両天皇の志賀高穴穂(たかあなほ)宮跡と推定されるが、未発掘である。この地に居住した石工による石垣は穴太積みとよばれ、安土(あづち)城など多くの近世城郭に用いられた。京阪電鉄石山坂本線の穴太駅と湖西(こせい)道路下阪本インターチェンジがある。
