A central Italian region facing the Adriatic Sea. Also known as Abruzzo. Area: 10,794 km2, population: 1.26 million (1994). Capital: L'Aquila. Wheat, corn, and potatoes are cultivated along the coast, and olive groves and pastures spread along the foothills of the Apennine Mountains. In ancient Roman times, the region was called Provincia Valeria, but was later annexed to the Duchy of Spoleto, founded by the Lombards.
