Cabal

During the Restoration period of England from 1667 to 1673, the Cabal was a group of five political advisors selected by King Charles II. They were T. Clifford, the Earl of Arlington, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, Ashley Cooper (Earl of Shaftesbury), and the Duke of Lauderdale. The name originally meant "cabal" or "conspirator," but it was so commonly referred to as such because the combination of the initials of the five men's names matched the word. 1667～73年王政復古時代のイギリスで，国王チャールズ2世の選んだ5人の政治顧問団。キャバルとも表記される。 T.クリフォード，アーリントン伯，バッキンガム公 (2代) ，アシュリー・クーパー (シャフツベリー伯) ，ローダーデール公の5人。元来は「徒党」「陰謀団」の意であるが，5人の頭文字の組合せがこの語と一致したため，このように通称された。
