During the Restoration period of England from 1667 to 1673, the Cabal was a group of five political advisors selected by King Charles II. They were T. Clifford, the Earl of Arlington, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, Ashley Cooper (Earl of Shaftesbury), and the Duke of Lauderdale. The name originally meant "cabal" or "conspirator," but it was so commonly referred to as such because the combination of the initials of the five men's names matched the word.
