A perennial aquatic plant of the family Psammaceae native to South America (illustration). It is also called water poppy. It was introduced to Japan in the early Showa period and is now widespread. It has shiny, round, heart-shaped leaves. The rhizome is long and slender, running horizontally, and white. From summer to autumn, beautiful yellow, three-petaled flowers about 5 cm in diameter bloom on pedicels that protrude above the water surface. The Japanese and English names were given to the flower because it resembles a poppy at first glance. The flowers last for only one day, but bloom one after another. It is closely related to the Japanese tochikagami, and is also called kibana tochikagami. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
