Core school - Kikan Gakko

...That is, the system is a four-year common basic school, followed by three separate schools: a four-year Volksschuloberstufe (higher secondary school), a five- or six-year Mittelschule or Realschule, and a nine-year Gymnasium. In 1964, the Hamburg Agreement on the unification of the education system expanded the upper secondary school to a five-year Hauptschule (core school), clearly positioning it as a secondary education institution alongside the six-year Realschule and the nine-year Gymnasium. The term Volksschule is no longer officially used, but it is still commonly used as a colloquial name for the nine-year general compulsory education school that combines the basic school and the core school. After the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, the West German system is being adopted in the states of the former East Germany.
