A geomorphological term. An index of elevation difference within a certain range. There are three ways of expressing it: (1) The difference in elevation between the highest point and the lowest point within a unit area. (2) The relative height between adjacent mountain peaks and valley floors. (3) The difference in elevation between abrupt peaks and valley faces. Method (1) is generally used. If a small unit area is used in (1), it ends up being an index similar to slope. There are various ways of determining the unit area, with the growth curve method being the most representative. It is possible to classify terrain based on the distribution of relief. [Shigemi Takayama] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
